Do It Yourself: Install Your Own Garage Door Panels

It seems like only a few years ago that stores as Home Depot became the mecca of do it yourself (DIY) home improvement projects.  Every possible project’s potential was waiting to manifest as you walked through the doors. Tools, materials, and even pointers from the staff and occasional seminars, provided all necessary components of the next add-on or upgrade. Interestingly, however, garage door panels seemed to rank among pieces of projects that perhaps brought “DIYers” back down to earth.

Now, further down the line, blogs and forums provide the additional details necessary to demystify projects like installing these panels. Recommendations regarding everything from selecting between long-range panels and short-range panels, to finding sales and planning for post-installation maintenance are available through a quick online search. These additional gap-fillers now enable garage door replacement to be within anyone’s reach.

Choices of wood or painted panels input regarding appropriate insulation and alternatives to fiberglass, and pointers about how to obtain the precision necessary for flush panels: all of this information waits patiently and quietly, just a few keystrokes away on the web.  You will find that only a few tools are necessary.  A screwdriver, along with a ratchet and socket set, should do the trick.  Once the replacement has been chosen, and purchased or ordered, the steps are fairly simple and straightforward.

Keep in mind that any electronic opening systems should be unplugged before proceeding.  While this sounds like common sense, many mishaps have occurred simply because those doing the work felt that it was unnecessary to take the time for such a precaution. Doing so helps you to avoid damaging the opening system’s components, and compounding the workload, as well. A safe project site also makes for smooth project completion.

With the power disconnected, the garage door can be manually opened before each of its springs is removed. Disassemble each panel, one-by-one, for a complete replacement; or simply proceed until you have reached the damaged piece. This systematic technique is necessary due to the roller, or wheel-based, components that rest on the automatically opening track.

If required, use the ratchet and socket set to help you loosen each piece, and then easily lift it off the track. In reverse order, replace and realign the new pieces, sliding the rollers back in along the tracks. Watch the panel placement to confirm that each one rests gently against the next before attaching them.

Self inspect the connections, so that each section adheres appropriately with the others. Adjoining pieces must be locked-in firmly. Only after reviewing the work from various angles for secure installation should the opener is plugged back in. As your new garage door panels travel smoothly along the tracks, they provide your final confirmation that the task has been accomplished effectively.

Congratulate yourself on a job well done.  Invite the neighbors to the unveiling of your personally installed garage door panels, and toast to the money you saved by completing the work yourself. Enjoy your cold beverage, and admire your accomplishment.

Just do a search of the specific kind of panel you are looking for. There is plenty of quality sites available. PM me if you would like some suggestions. They don't allow hyperlinks on this site.

Does anyone know where you can order custom made panels? We are doing some home improvement to our house and would like custom wood panels done. We live in a small town so we are looking for something on the internet that we can order. Thank you.

I have tried to install garage door panels myself and it really isn't that hard. My neighbor hired a contractor to install some custom made panels on his house and I think I did just as good of a job as he did with a lot less price tag.

I find that the majority of good garage door panels can be found at your local hardware store. You may need to ask the clerk working to where you can find them in the store. You could also go to home depot but I find that it is hard to get anything custom there.
